Calgary Family Weekend Guide: September 5 to 7

The first weekend of the school year is a long one. Labour Day falls on Monday, September 7, 2026, which gives Calgary families three full days, and the biggest draws are BBQ on the Bow at Shriners Stables, which is free to attend, the opening weekend of Halloweekends at Calaway Park, and a free family music day at Studio Bell for Alberta Culture Days. Sunday brings the Calgary Pride Parade downtown, and Monday closes with the Labour Day Classic at McMahon Stadium.

2. What is the best free thing to do with kids this weekend?

BBQ on the Bow is the easy answer. It runs Friday through Sunday at Shriners Stables at 5151 101 St NW, admission is free, and the organizers describe it as a free, fun, family oriented annual festival. It is also a sanctioned Kansas City Barbeque Society competition, so alongside the food vendors there are actual competition teams working, which is more interesting to watch than most festival midways.

The second free option is the Afro Caribbean Festival YYC at Lot 6, 311 8 Street SW, running both Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with music, dance, food and storytelling. Admission is free but it works on advance tickets, and at the time this post was written the advance tickets were already showing as claimed, so check before you drive downtown.

The third is simply the Calgary Farmers' Market. The West location at 25 Greenbriar Drive NW is open Saturday until 7 p.m. and Sunday until 5 p.m., and for families in Tuscany, Bowness or Cougar Ridge it is a fifteen minute drive rather than a downtown trip.

3. Is Calaway Park worth it on opening weekend?

Halloweekends at Calaway Park opens Saturday, September 5 and runs September 5 to 7 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. That matters, because from September 12 onward the park drops to Saturdays, Sundays and Thanksgiving Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Opening weekend gives you nine hours of park time instead of six, for the same ticket.

If you would rather wait, the Boo Crew Costume Party runs September 12 and 13, when families are invited to come in costume for activities and prize giveaways. That is a better fit if your kids want to dress up, and it avoids opening weekend crowds.

4. What is happening downtown on Sunday?

Calgary Pride Week runs August 31 to September 6, 2026, and the Pride Parade is on Sunday, September 6. For 2026 the festival has moved away from a single festival site toward a citywide format connecting events and performances across multiple downtown venues and partner organizations. Pride programming this year includes all ages events, so families with younger children have options beyond the parade route itself. 5. What can we do indoors if the weather turns?

Two reliable answers, both open regardless of what early September decides to do.

Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre at 850 4 Street SE, is running an Alberta Culture Days Family Music Celebration in its PlayLab on both Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On Saturday at 2 p.m. there is also a hands on violin session for young children. These are included with general admission rather than sold separately.

The Hangar Flight Museum at 4629 McCall Way NE is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is one of the better wet weather options in the city for kids who like machines, and it rarely feels crowded on a long weekend when everyone else is outdoors.

6. How should we plan the Monday?

Labour Day Monday, September 7, is the Labour Day Classic at McMahon Stadium, 1817 Crowchild Trail NW, kicking off at 4 p.m. It is a Calgary institution and, for northwest families, it is close to home. If you are going, treat parking around McMahon Stadium as the constraining factor rather than the ticket, and plan to arrive well before kickoff or take transit.

If a football afternoon is not your family's thing, Monday is also the quietest day of the three at Calaway Park and at the museums, since a good share of the city is either at the game or already thinking about Tuesday morning.
