Buyers ask which NW Calgary community has the best schools. The more useful question is which school a specific address is actually designated for, because that answer has changed twice in the last twelve years. Robert Thirsk High School opened in 2013 and North Trail High School opened in 2023, and each one redrew the attendance areas around it. Most community-by-community lists online, including some published by schools and community associations, still describe the arrangement that existed before those two schools opened.

This guide sets out which high school serves which NW community, names the source for each one, and is explicit about the three communities where reputable sources still contradict each other. It also covers the two situations that catch buyers out most often.

3. The Two Situations That Catch Buyers Out

Diefenbaker lists Panorama Hills, Hidden Valley, Livingston, Harvest Hills, Country Hills, Coventry Hills and North Haven under its IB programme only.
That is not the same as being designated for the school. A family reading a list that simply says "Diefenbaker" can reasonably assume regular-programme access they do not have.
For those communities the regular-programme school is North Trail, or needs checking by address.

CBC reported in May 2024 that North Trail told prospective students and guardians it had no space for them the following year.
