After-School Care in Calgary: Programs, Costs and How to Register

"After-school care" actually means two very different things in Calgary, and mixing them up is the most common planning mistake families make. One is the City of Calgary's free or low-cost drop-in enrichment programming. The other is full daily licensed child care from a fee-based provider. Which one a family needs depends entirely on whether they need supervised care every single school day, or enrichment programming to fill part of the after-school window.

This guide covers both paths, what each actually costs, and when to register, since the timelines for each are very different.

1. Two Different Things, Two Different Plans

If a family needs coverage every school day so both parents can work full-time hours, that almost always means a licensed, fee-based Out-of-School Care provider. If a family has some flexibility and wants their child in engaging, structured activities a few afternoons a week at no or low cost, Calgary AfterSchool is the better fit. Many families end up using a mix of both.

2. Calgary AfterSchool: Free and Low-Cost Programming

Calgary AfterSchool is a partnership between the City of Calgary and dozens of community organizations, offering free or low-cost programs in sports, arts, leadership, and healthy living for children and youth ages 6 to 16 (grades 1 through 12). Programs run at recreation facilities, community centres, community-based partner agencies, and directly inside some schools.

3. Licensed Out-of-School Care: Full Daily Coverage

For families who need coverage every school day, licensed Out-of-School Care (OSC) providers, including YMCA Calgary, TOPP Kids, and various community-based operators, run structured before and after school programs, often directly inside partner schools. CBE itself does not operate before or after school care. Where a CBE school hosts an OSC program, it is run by a third-party operator renting space in the school, and not every school has one.

4. What It Actually Costs

Alberta's flat $326.25-per-month Affordability Grant rate, the one many families hear about for daycare, applies only to children up to kindergarten age attending during school hours. Out-of-school care for kindergarten to grade 6 students is priced individually by each provider and is not eligible for that flat-rate funding. The separate Alberta Child Care Subsidy Program can still reduce costs for eligible families with children in a licensed OSC program, based on household income.

5. When to Register

Registration timing is where families most often get caught out. Licensed Out-of-School Care spots, particularly at popular providers, commonly open registration in spring or early summer for the following school year and do not automatically roll over, meaning a spot from last year is not guaranteed without re-registering. Calgary AfterSchool's drop-in programs generally do not require the same advance registration, though some structured or high-demand sessions do fill up.
